A Day on the Appian Way: Rome’s Timeless Road Less Traveled

Exploring Ancient Rome’s soul with our expert guide, Pascal

Step back in time with Pascal as he takes you on a journey through the Appia Antica, Rome’s legendary “Queen of Roads.” This isn’t just a tour — it’s a story of history, taste, and connection with the city’s ancient heart.

The Experience

Our journey began at the Pyramid of Caius Cestius, standing tall beside the ancient Aurelian Walls — a gateway between modern Rome and the city’s timeless past. Guests climbed into our vintage Piaggio Ape Calessino, the hum of the engine setting the rhythm for a day that would blend history, culture, and taste.

As we rolled past the majestic Baths of Caracalla, Pascal brought the ruins to life with stories of emperors and philosophers who once gathered there. A short ride later, we stopped at Santo Stefano Rotondo, Rome’s oldest circular church — a masterpiece of early Christian architecture that still feels sacred in its simplicity.

“The Appia Antica isn’t just a road,” Pascal told our guests, smiling as the tuk-tuks lined up under the cypress trees. “It’s the spine of the Roman Empire — and every stone still remembers its footsteps.”

Crossing Porta San Sebastiano, we entered the Appia Antica, the legendary “Queen of Roads.” Along the way, we visited the humble Church of Domine Quo Vadis, where Saint Peter is said to have met Christ, and descended into the Catacombs of San Callisto, where early Christians once sought refuge. On the surface again, the Tomb of Cecilia Metella rose before us — a monumental reminder of Rome’s grandeur — followed by the remains of Emperor Maxentius’ Villa and Circus, silent yet majestic under the Roman sun.

After walking a stretch of the ancient road, it was time to taste Rome’s living culture. We headed to the Garbatella district, a vibrant neighborhood of 1930s charm, where guests enjoyed authentic Roman cheeses, hams, and fresh focaccia at a local norcineria. The flavors were rustic, rich, and full of character — just like the city itself.

Our final stop was Nero Vaniglia, one of Rome’s most beloved pasticcerie. Surrounded by the aroma of espresso and sweet pastries, guests shared stories and smiles, savoring the moment as much as the desserts.

By the time we returned to the Pyramid of Cestius, the day had turned golden, and our travelers carried more than memories — they carried a piece of Rome’s soul.

Every Appia Antica tour with Etuk is a journey through time, taste, and connection. For a few unforgettable hours, you don’t just see Rome — you feel it.

We want to thank Eugene for being a wonderful tour guide for experience in Rome. Prior to our time with Eugene, we had already seen some of the major sites in Rome. As a result, he was very flexible and providing us with time to see other sites that were not typical. His knowledge was fantastic and we got a chance to see Romi not as a first time, tourist but rather an opportunity to see Romi from the local perspective. I would highly recommend Eugene as a tour guide.

We had Eugenio on May 30th, he was absolutely amazing! His passion, knowledge and bright personality made the tour so much fun for our family. This is my first time in Rome and cannot think of another way to see so many places in a simple, easy way. If you’re looking for something to do in Rome, highly recommend a golf cart tour with Eugenio!

We had a fantastic tour and our guide Fabrizio was great. We zipped around Rome and saw or stopped at many of the hot spots within the city. It sure beats walking everywhere and gives you a good idea of what to return to for more in depth sightseeing.
